The DailyMail discreetly edited one of its articles on Friday, removing reporter Jane Herz’s byline from a story critiquing the attire that White House correspondent Natalie Winters wore for a photograph outside the White House.
Winters, a co-host of Steve Bannon’s War Room program, posted the photograph of herself wearing a black sweater over a white collared shirt, along with what the DailyMail described as “a short, white leather skirt” and “chunky white sneakers and socks.” The tabloid’s Jan. 30 story, authored by reporter Jane Herz and titled “Controversial White House Correspondent slammed over ‘inappropriate’ outfits,” proceeded to cite a litany of complaints from critics on social media. One person said Winters should “rethink the skirt and sneakers.” Another said she dressed “like a high school intern,” while a third said her shoes looked like “classic white dad New Balances.”

More than 5,000 people responded to the story on X, nearly all of whom sided with Winters. “She’s just fine,” one person wrote. “Stop this nonsense.” Another said, “What’s controversial about those outfits? Have you not been outside in the summer in the last decade?”

Winters also responded, writing on X, “The ‘journalist’ behind this piece, Jane Herz, got a master’s degree in journalism to write up anon hate comments over my *sweater.*”
“Since they can’t censor us anymore, they’re trying to discredit this show by attacking my clothes.
So have fun covering my wardrobe choices for the next four years.

Addressing the story in comments on War Room, she added, “If you want to attack or impugn my work for what I choose to wear, have fun covering my wardrobe choices for the next four years while you sit in a stupid cubicle as a low-level reporter for the DailyMail.”

The DailyMail had replaced Herz’s byline on the story as of Jan. 31, fewer than 24 hours after its initial publication. However, a copy of the story remained on Herz’s profile on Muck Rack, a website that archives journalists’ work.
It is worth noting that reporters often cover stories assigned to them by editors, even when the stories do not spark their personal interest. There is no clear indication that Herz, identified by the DailyMail as its “style and beauty” reporter, was the one who proposed writing about another member of the media.
